Claude Monet Masterpiece Goes on Display in Worcester for First Time in 30 Years

A masterpiece by world-renowned French Impressionist Claude Monet has gone on display at Worcester City Art Gallery & Museum, brought to the city through the support of the Worcestershire Heritage, Art & Museums charity.

The charity has funded bringing the artwork, which is on loan from Glynn Vivian Gallery, to the city, to hang alongside Monet’s contemporaries including Eugène Boudin, Charles-François Daubigny and Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, in the new exhibition Reflections, which opened on Saturday 12 September. It is almost 30 years since a painting by Monet has been on show in Worcester.

Chair of Trustees Caroline Naisbitt says:

It was the aim of the charity’s original founder, Professor Rolf Olsen, to enhance the cultural life of Worcester and to increase the Art Gallery & Museum’s reputation as a regionally significant art gallery. In bringing the Monet to Worcester we are fulfilling both of those ambitions and helping to cement the city’s reputation as a cultural destination. I hope residents and visitors alike will be drawn to the Art Gallery to see the beautiful Monet artwork and enjoy the fabulous Reflections exhibition.

Reflections features works from Worcester City’s own collection including much-loved favourite Chadding on Mounts Bay by Stanhope Forbes, as well as loans from the National Gallery and works by contemporary artists including David Hockney. Reflections inspires the imagination and serves as a reminder of the human responsibility to protect the seas, rivers, streams and waterways that are vital for the future. The River Severn, the longest river in the UK, has shaped Worcester’s identity and industrial heritage for centuries – and continues to today.

Reflections has been organised by Worcester City Art Gallery & Museum in collaboration with the National Gallery, London and private lenders, and supported by Worcestershire Heritage, Arts & Museums charity.

Reflections is on at Worcester City Art Gallery & Museum until Sunday 3 January. The Art Gallery & Museum is open Tuesday to Saturday, 10am – 4pm, and Sunday, 10am – 3pm
