Local people are being invited to get behind a new Rotary Club which has launched in Droitwich to support local community groups.
Droitwich Rotary will fill the gap left three years ago following the closure of the two former Clubs which ceased due to struggling membership numbers.
Bringing Rotary back to Droitwich was the brainchild of Tom Lymer and Sandy Lake who had both been active members in the running of Droitwich Spa RC and Droitwich Saltway RC.
At an event at Gurkha Majestic Dining last month, President Dan Birch was presented with his Chain of Office by District Governor Jasminder Dhaliwal and officially welcomed the first members.
Councillor Birch said:
Weβre delighted to announce the return of the Rotary Club in Droitwich Spa, with a renewed focus on supporting local community groups and projects. For many years, alongside Droitwich Lions, the Rotary Club raised thousands of pounds for good causes. In the current climate we believe coming together to support our community is more important than ever.
The launch night also saw them making their first contribution to local good causes when they handed over a cheque for Β£200 to Jo Kirkham, the Commissioner of the Girl Guides to help refurbish the gates at the local Guidesβ hut.
Jasminder said:
The formation of this new club is a testament to the dedication and perseverance of Tom Lyner and Sandy Lake, whose hard work over many months made it possible. It was therefore especially fitting that Immediate Past District Governor Jonathan Wilding presented them both with Paul Harris Fellow recognition in appreciation of their outstanding service to Rotary.
βSeeing a new club flourish is a reminder that Rotary continues to evolve, attract people who want to make a difference and remain relevant in todayβs world. Sharing this special occasion over a wonderful Nepalese meal made the evening even more enjoyable. It is always exciting to see new clubs growing and bringing fresh energy into Rotary. We shall continue to work with and support local community groups.
Already being planned is a Race Night on October 3rd at Gaudet Luce Golf Club with funds raised going to 1st Droitwich Scout Group towards the purchase of new security doors for their headquarters at Acre Lane Droitwich. Tickets for the event will be advertised on Facebook.
The Club will also be working with Droitwich Lions on their Santa Sleigh event, collecting funds to support local charities. In addition, as well as supporting The Defibrillator Association to monitor the local defibrillators stationed throughout Droitwich. This involves checking that they have no signs of being vandalised and appear in good working order.
But, says Jasminder, itβs increasing membership that remains top priority. Information about the new Club or how to join is available from Sandy Lake at: lake391@btinternet.com or on 07710 527529.
