Children in Worcester’s Ronkswood area have a new place to enjoy this summer, following the completion of improvements to a local play area.
Worcester City Council has invested £155,000 in revamping the playground, which stands next to Ronkswood Hub in Canterbury Road.
There’s a colourful new look for the toddlers’ area, with a new roundabout, seesaw, play castle, storytelling area and a stage. Eye-catching new floor graphics encourage little ones to play running and jumping games, and new fencing helps to keep the toddlers safe.
The larger play area for juniors has been designed with a special focus on making sure it’s just as appealing for girls as boys. It features a new set of swings that face each other to encourage socialising, an exciting new climbing facility made of hexagonal blocks, and a special space that incorporates somersault bars, stepping posts, a net hammock and a quiet recovery spot.
The adjoining multi-use game area, for older children, has also been revamped with new hoops and back boards, new line markings for basketball and football, and hard surfacing to replace the old muddy access points at the goals.
Councillor Adrian Gregson, Chair of the City Council’s Place and Economic Development Committee, said:
School’s out, and so is the sun – so there couldn’t be a better time to throw open the gates at the fantastic regenerated play facilities in Ronkswood.
“Local kids are already enjoying the benefits that the City Council’s investment has brought and I’m sure they will continue to for many years to come.
The refurbishment has been carried out by Greenfields on behalf of the Council and has taken eight weeks to complete.
The improvements at Ronkswood play area are the latest result of the on-going Worcester Play Plan, which commits the City Council to improving outdoor play provision across the city to meet the needs of all children and young people.
Work on two more play areas will be completed shortly, and plans for improvements to Power Park in St Peter’s will be revealed later this year.
